Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a heterogenous group of tumours which originate from the diffuse neuroendocrine cell system. Given the extent of the gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) tract, it harbours most of the neuroendocrine cells in the human body and as such, is the most common origin of NENs. Although uncommon, their incidence has been on the rise in the last four decades, presumably due to enhanced detection. At the highest level, NENs are broken down into two main types:

– Well differentiated tumours known as Neuroendocrine Tumours or NETs
– Poorly differentiated tumours known as Neuroendocrine Carcinomas or NECs

While major morphologic and biologic differences distinguish well-differentiated NETs from poorly differentiated NECs, well differentiated NETs clearly are not a single entity, despite tumors classified as such sharing many histologic and immunophenotypic features. Conversely to poorly differentiated NECs, which are highly aggressive, well differentiated NETs are considered indolent, slow-growing neoplasms, but they are indisputably malignant.

You may sometimes feel like you're not surviving but if you're reading this then you most definitely must be! For the first few years after my diagnosis, I avoided using the word 'survivor' in relation to my incurable cancer. I had no idea what was going to happen. It just didn't seem to sit right despite the fact I'm a 'glass half full' kind of guy. However ........ I was studying the term 'Survivorship' and found it also applies to those living with incurable and long-term cancer. This piece of research totally changed my thinking.
