The trillions of microorganisms that live there affect each other and their environment in various ways. They also appear to influence many aspects of your overall health, both within your digestive system and outside of it. If you read their summary here, you can understand some of the implications of this study.
However, as the study concluded, midgut NET patients have an altered gut microbiome which could suggest a role in NET development and provide novel targets for microbiome-based diagnostics and therapeutics. Multi-center collaboration is essential in order to validate these findings and translate the outcomes to the clinical setting. Note, although the term ‘midgut’ is used, it appears to be directed at only small intestine NETs.
This is a highly complex area but I know some of you like the in-depth technical stuff, thus the publication. This is very early days in investigating this issue so please don’t expect output anytime soon. Nonetheless, very interesting.
