Cancer that begins in glandular (secretory) cells.

“Adeno-” is a prefix that means “gland.” In general, glands secrete things. The word “carcinoma” means a malignant tumor that starts in epithelial tissue. Put the two words together and you get “adenocarcinoma,” which means a malignant tumor in epithelial tissue, specifically in a gland. Glandular cells are found in tissue that lines certain internal organs and makes and releases substances in the body, such as mucus, digestive juices, or other fluids. Most cancers of the breast, pancreas, lung, prostate, and colon are adenocarcinomas.

Every July, I think back to my diagnosis of advanced Neuroendocrine Cancer in 2010. I guess one of the reasons I do this is to be thankful that I'm still alive but also, I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm still trying to remember small detail from that period.
